Introductions

According to Nelson Riddle, you shouldn’t upstage the vocalist by stating the melody in the introduction, instead, come up with a figure that captures the mood of the piece. The figure can then be used in other parts of the arrangement as well. The singer will thank you!

• Last eight
• I vi ii V vamp (usually eight bars, twice)
• vamp on V pedal
• Tied to ending vocal tag or vamp, same vamp, no vocal for intro.

Endings

• Ryhthm section stop for rubato last vocal line
• vamp on V pedal
• Tied to ending vocal tag or vamp, same vamp, no vocal for intro.
