Introductions
According to Nelson Riddle, you shouldn’t upstage the vocalist by stating the melody in the introduction, instead, come up with a figure that captures the mood of the piece. The figure can then be used in other parts of the arrangement as well. The singer will thank you!
- Last eight
- I vi ii V vamp (usually eight bars, twice)
- vamp on V pedal
- Tied to ending vocal tag or vamp, same vamp, no vocal for intro.
